End of the Summer: Excellence in Journalism Conference

This is officially my last blog post because classes start tomorrow and that means summer adventures are coming to an end. As I previously mentioned, even though I am no longer in NYC I had one more post before the start of school. I was fortunate to kick off the end of summer with an amazing trip to Southern California to attend the 2013 Excellence in Journalism Conference.

Gotta get a picture with the ears!

Gotta get a picture with the ears!

Earlier this last school year I received the George Foreman Tribute to Lyndon B. Johnson Scholarship (It’s specifically for UT journalism students so if you qualify, definitely apply here) from the Radio Television Digital News Association, so I was invited to join the big weekend. I had never been to a national conference before and I must say it was a spectacular experience–I’m definitely going to try attend more! Literally everyone I spoke with was more than willing to get to know me and assist me throughout my senior year. I met anchors, producers, and reporters from dozens of stations around the country, NBC Universal, Telemundo, CNN, ABC, ESPN, NPR and more. Eva Longoria was even in attendance! I haven’t been in such a large and encouraging environment!

Since the conference took place in Anaheim this year, they offered Disneyland and California Adventure tickets! For anyone who knows me, I’m a HUGE fan of everything Disney so it was a great surprise–I was in 7th heaven! I had a blast hanging out and making friends with some of the other students who attended as well! So please, if you have the opportunity to attend conferences like this, GO!

This summer has been amazing with a lot of fun adventures! I learned so much and I really shouldn’t be as terrified as I really am for this upcoming year, but it’s inevitable. I hope that I’ve been able to bring awareness to some cool opportunities that are worth pursuing; word of mouth is powerful and I want to help! If you know of any other awesome summer opportunities that would be beneficial, rewarding, and fun, please share with others! Thank you to everyone for a great summer and stay tuned…I have some more up my sleeve!

Meeting the other scholarship winners on the first evening in Downtown Disney!

It’s interesting how we all match.

My roommate and I! It was great to meet other amazing journalists from around the country!

As I mentioned, I love Disney!

My flight was cancelled for an entire day, but that meant that I was able to see my friend, Taelor, who has moved to LA for the semester!
